What’s happening in Perth food news this week

We start our day with a visit to Knysna Heads, two tall sandstone cliffs that form a channel through which the turbulent Indian Ocean enters the calmer Knysna Lagoon. Our tour begins in Port Elizabeth, colloquially known as PE, but officially Gqeberha, a Xhosa name for the river that runs through the city. We have a welcome briefing in the evening to discuss the adventures to come. “The Crown” as we are known by the locals, has always been a fantastic spot for a drink, a good meal and affordable accommodation.

The order in which we do these activities may be reversed. Today, we head west to the official start of the Garden Route at Storms River in Tsitsikamma National Park. Stretching along the coast, the park, which comprises rocky coastlines, fairytale forests, waterfalls and rivers, gets its name from a local Khoekhoe language meaning ‘place of abundant water’.

The ideal time for burger lovers to visit is for lunch on Fridays when – from noon to 3pm – there are two options for $20 a pop. One is a Highland Wagyu beef cheeseburger with chargrilled tomato and a thwack of mustard; the other is all about beer-battered haloumi, with baby red peppers. Pietro Petrorius was the best group leader I have had on the last 6-7 tours I have had this year with Exodus. She singlehandedly dealt with what other tours had two or three people. Her knowledge of her country and every aspect was incredible.

There’s grass-fed beef with smoked bacon and bourbon relish; chicken schnitzel with salsa verde; and a v2 vegie burger with beetroot relish. The “Whopper” at north-side dive bar Lulie Tavern gives the Hungry’s Jack’s original a run for its money. And on Wednesday – aka locals’ night – it’s just $12, alongside the rest of the burgers, which usually cost up to $19. There’s the Dead Ringer (a buffalo fried-chicken number) and a vegan Whopper, plus $18 jugs of beer to sweeten the deal.

Touring was on a mini bus, which was spacious enough for our tour group of 13. Most drives were reasonable, but there was one very long day of 7 hours with only a couple of short stops.
